He Kept Wife in the Dark Till Victims Came Knocking

Pg1 \ Home \ Straits Times \ Saturday \ 25th March 2006

-gambling is a sin; it will get you nowhere-

Betting, gambling, punting, whatever you call it, it is still bad. Property agent Mr Lee went soccer betting, had a winnig streak and got greedy. Then he made large losses. In order to "earn" the money back, he offered a "buy low, sell high" scheme to acquaintances and former clients, collecting money for the property. He collected $2 million from them though there was no property at all. He even kept all this from his wife, who only found out about it when debtors came knocking. This is a very selfish gesture because not only did he cause himself to be thrown into jail, but as one of the breadwinners of his family, he also caused the family to have financial difficulties and brought shame to the family.

His wife's troubles actually go beyond the shame of a husband in jail, for she is a property agent herself. She now locks herself in their home because she cannot bear to face her clients and those in the property business, an action which puts her job at risk. Their daughter misses her father, and cannot bear the thought of losing her mother as well. Thus it can be seen that one man's actions has led to a series of events that has made life worse for many.

The lesson to be learned is never gamble, never get greedy, never cheat people; especially when it comes to money, and never lie to your spouse.

Alternatively, the lesson to be learned is that if you ever gamble, make sure you always win. -- DE

Polar Ice Sheets Melting at Alarming Pace

Pg44 \ World \ Straits Times \ Saturday \ March 25th 2006
====================================

-the water will rise until it spills over-

The last time the glaciers took a dive into the oceans of the world, it was due to an increase in solar radiation after changes in the Earth's tilt and orbit. Now scientists say that the main culprits of global warming are greenhouse gases from pollution.

The rising warming trend indicates that average temperatures could jump by at least 2.5 degrees Celcius by the end of the century. This means another dive into the ocean for Mother Earth's glaciers, with disastrous results.

What could happen if the Antarctic ice sheet melts is it would fracture and cause more icebergs to plunge into the ocean and causing the sea level to rise, spelling doom for the lower lying land areas.

This increase in global temperatures scares me because it means there are lives at stake, and that this is a real problem we all have to face. Time is running out for the glaciers and for Mankind, so everybody should be diligent in cutting down on activities which contribute to global warming.

Global warming has been a problem for quite some time and that indicates that not enough people know just how to solve it, or just cannot be bothered to give up their own comforts for the greater good, which is rather selfish gesture; showing that they do not care for others at all.

Since problems for the Earth means problems for them, people should show more concern for the world they live in. To do that, they might want to try sacrificing a few creature comforts such as owning a car; they should carpool instead. -- DE
